The end is nigh for the adventurous DEFIANCE trilogy by C.J. ![]() ![]() After explaining how Cheney's mindset came about and how he and Bush rose to power, Savage contextualizes some of the major events in the first six years of their administration that demonstrate the return to an imperial presidency. Savage proves how Cheney progressively made good on his promise, promoting an expansion of presidential power. Cheney vowed that if he ever served in the White House again, he would not let the president he served be similarly pushed around. As one of Ford's two chiefs of staff (Donald Rumsfeld was the other), Cheney observed an emboldened Congress, overcompensating for the perils of Watergate, stymie the powers of the presidency. Savage argues that Cheney has assumed a prominent and powerful role as vice president, which is unlike any of his predecessors, and that Cheney's role in the Ford administration shaped the vice president he would later become. However, more important to Savage's evidentiary history of the modern imperial presidency than Bush's heritage is Cheney's origins. ![]() Bush's rise to power twenty-five years later. ![]() ![]() By giving Bush, Sr., his big break, Ford paved the way for George H. ![]() In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:ġ64 Michigan Historical Review to be America's liaison to China and later CIA director. ![]() 5/10/2023 0 Comments Deep work and digital minimalism![]() ![]() ![]() Innovations like smartphones and social media are useful, but many of us are increasingly troubled by how much control these tools seem to exert over our daily experiences-including how we spend our free time and how we feel about ourselves. ![]() In recent years, our culture's relationship with personal technology has transformed from something exciting into something darker. The novel is spearheaded by feministic insight, and the author relates the story largely through the eyes of female characters hailing from different generations. Yet while it is blithely unafraid to explore themes of outright controversy in the confines of Sri Lanka (and even beyond), the story is woven with a sense of familiarity and sensitivity – providing rich food for thought for those who find themselves grappling with tough, existential questions – spanning but not limited to ones like: ‘Why are we threatened by change?’ ![]() ![]() ![]() Set in the 1980s amid a civil conflict the island-country still has trouble alienating itself from to this very day, the novel is an incisive reminder of the ravages of war, destruction and loss on one’s psyche and lifestyle.
